Bango people: Dan Hale, Platform Operations Team Leader

dan people photoWith exciting career opportunities in the Bango Operations team, we spoke to Dan Hale, Platform Operations Team Leader about his progression from apprentice to team leader in just a few years.

What does a day in the life of a Platform Operations Team Leader entail?
Essentially, it’s making sure the team is working in the most efficient way possible, keeping them happy and being there as a mentor to ensure they develop the skills they need. Another big part is supporting the ticketing system, making sure things are working to desired standards and running smoothly, and effectively communicating updates with key customers.

What do you enjoy the most about your role?
It’s very rewarding. Before my current position, I was a First Line Engineer at Bango which was a more technical role; fixing problems and gaining hands-on skills through experience. Since my promotion to team leader, I am now able to teach and nurture the team to fix those problems, sharing my first-hand experience and expertise to progress their careers.

How has your career progressed at Bango?
I started as an apprentice Associate Engineer, working my way up to a First Line Engineer and now I’m a Platform Operations Team Leader. I have developed rapidly in the short time I have been here and my career progression has exceeded my expectations. It’s been a really rewarding experience so far.

What inspired you to start your career as an apprentice?
Bango offered a fantastic opportunity where I could gain qualifications and study while earning money. I’ve been here for almost five years and progressed to a management position, as well as studying my degree at the same time with the sponsorship of Bango. It’s a fantastic scheme and I’m grateful to have been part of it from its early stages as one of the first Bango apprentices.

What advice would you give to aspiring apprentices?
I’d say, ‘just give it a go’. You join so young that there is really nothing to lose, it pays off for a lot of people. There are so many people who join and progress rapidly, it’s not just the technical experience, the social development is vital. Bango is an open environment and you aren’t penned into a corner and isolated. You’re part of the team from day one and it’s rare to have opportunities like this in tech companies. Secondly, prep for your interview!
